Marriage and Family Therapy
Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs), are mental health professionals who have been trained in psychotherapy, family systems and mental disorders. They can diagnose and treat these disorders in the context of marriages, couples, and families.
TCTCA marriage and family therapists have years of experience in the field. They treat mental and behavioral disorders as well as emotional and mental disorders. Treatment is usually divided between time spent on individual therapy and time spent on couple therapy, family therapy, or both, if necessary. MFT may also be referred to as couple and family therapy, couples counseling, marriage counseling, or family counseling.
In general Marriage and Family Therapists expand the traditional focus on the individual by addressing the nature and role that individuals play in primary relationships networks, such as marriage and family. MFTs have a holistic approach to health care. They are concerned about the long-term, overall well-being of people and their families. This type of therapy focuses on communication, coping skills, constructive problem-solving, as well as ways to build trust and strengthen healthy relationships in a family system.
Most MFTs have a graduate degree (Master’s or Doctoral) in marriage and Family therapy, and two years of clinical training.
