Embracing the New Year with Intention

As we transition from the old to the new, it’s tradition to set New Year’s resolutions. This year I spent some time outlining the things that have gone well the past year and what I would like to do better in the year ahead. It wasn’t until I started practicing breathwork and mindfulness consistently that I discovered the power of setting intentions – a practice that goes beyond resolutions and taps into the essence of our truest selves.

At the start of each year, I have an intention-setting ritual that begins by pausing and reflecting on the positive moments and events from the past year. Taking time to openly share my honest feelings, hurts, stressors, desires, and challenges is an important part of growth and reflection in order to move forward. This time of year, in Minnesota, it can be cold but there is a magical stillness in winter. It appears quiet and stagnant, but so much is going on under the surface. Being present and getting still helps me to be intentional about shaping the next chapter of my life.

We all have a desire to fix, change, or improve ourselves. In resolution setting, though, we tend to ignore the essential wisdom that mindfulness teaches us. It’s not about “fixing” ourselves, but rather reconnecting with our inherently divine selves—our wholeness. Setting intentions allows us to focus broadly on what we need in our lives. It blends the concepts of goal setting with self-reflection. By setting intentions, we gain a better understanding of ourselves and our own needs.

If you are interested in the practice of intention-setting, I encourage you to just start! Maybe choose a word or a short phrase that embodies your heart’s desire. A couple of phrases I use regularly are, acceptance, compassion, and “let it go, so it can flow”!

As we begin this new year, may you pause to connect with yourself and remember you are already whole. And then, may you practice pausing and reconnecting all year long.
